We are Jessica and Scott. We travel the world, seek out interesting ways to learn about the cultures we encounter and, through this blog, give you our sometimes-irreverent, sometimes-humorous, but always-informative take on the places we visit. We have come to this part of our life via a period of many years of living and working in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. We left our corporate jobs and bought a little olive farm in Puglia, the “heel” of Italy’s boot.
Traveling around Europe ignited Jessica’s passion for photography and her photo blog at www.jessicacoup.com resulted in several exhibitions of her work. Scott, who had been engaged in recreational writing for some time, took advantage of joblessness to do a blog about the experiences of an American couple moving to southern Italy. You can find it at www.souloftheheel.com. He has also written a book titled Soul of the Heel will be published soon. After three years in Italy, we moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, our base for traveling around Asia and elsewhere.
So, why World-Wide, Wide Eyed? We suffer from an incurable disease called curiosity. If you happen to be a cat, this malady can be fatal but, for us, it’s just expensive. Travel to other worlds, other peoples and other foods is what drives us and when we are not “on the road,” we are planning the next roadtrip. Our objective is, through Jessica’s ability to capture the wonders of the world photographically and Scott’s wordcraft, to share our experiences in a way that brings people and places to you. You will see the world through our eyes, laugh at our frequent misadventures, and sometimes even wish you were us.
Our travel philosophy, such as it is, is dictated to no small degree by our retirement income but we are not backpackers (though admittedly we sometimes we travel with a backpack), do not stay in hostels, and insist on always having our own bathroom. We save money by doing some basic research, shopping around for deals, and by not being stupid, something Jessica is better at than Scott is. In our posts, we will tell you and show you what we did, what we saw, and how we felt and we may also give you travel tips so that you can avoid doing the dumb stuff stuff that can cost you time and/or money.
One housekeeping item: throughout the posts, Scott (who is doing the writing) will be referred to as “I” or “me”; Jessica (who is taking the photos) will be referred to as “she,” “her,” or “the one of us whose opinions matter much more than the other’s.”
Thank you for checking us out and we invite you to continue to follow our adventures at World-Wide, Wide Eyed.
